The HR Focus Conference 2022 was launched during the Old Mutual HR Interactive event, held on Friday, 26th August 2022. During the event, themed, “HR’s Role in Business Stability during Economic Crisis”, Hannah Ashiokai Akrong the HR Director of Vodafone Ghana launched the 10TH edition of the annual HR Focus Conference 2022. In her launch, she said, “HR Focus events, especially this conference provides a much needed platform for business leaders, resource persons and students to discuss and find solutions to key issues in the world of work.” HR Focus Africa, Ghana’s first ever published HR Magazine has been leading conversations through their events, and biennial awards for over a decade, with the aim of improving best practice and increasing the relevance of HR Practice across Africa.

The event gathered hundreds of HR practitioners and business leaders and had other distinguished resource persons present such as: Mr. James Laar, Managing Director, L’AINE HR; Mrs. Akwelley Bulley, HR Director at UMB; Mr. Kwame Annor, Group Human Capital Director at Broadspectrum Limited; and Mr. Jehoshaphat T. Abaya, Human Capital Executive at Old Mutual Life Assurance. 

Mr. James Laar, the Managing Director of L’AINE HR in his address said, “Following the disruption of the world economy brought about by; Covid-19, explosion in Digitalization and the current economic crisis, there is the need for regular wider and broad-based engagement to dialogue on the future of work and the adoption of new HR Policies and business models that will enhance new ways of working.”

Speaking to the theme of the HR Interactive event, the CEO of Allianz Life Insurance, Mr. Gideon Ataraire, encouraged HR practitioners to improve the quality of contributions they make by increasing the knowledge they have of their businesses,”. In addition to this, Akwelley Bulley also stressed on the role Human Resource Practitioners need to play to ensure their employees have a comfortable work environment to meet business standards. She said, “HR Leaders need to start getting employees to use modern technology to make sure our people function excellently and offer their services.”

Mr. Kwame Annor spoke to the mindset of HR Practitioners saying, “The control and command system no longer works. Empathy is what we need in this time, to make the work environment better for all of us.” Mr. Abaya of Old Mutual also contributed to the discussion by pointing out the need to prepare for change. He said, “To stay relevant in business, we need to build a culture that supports change, and have an organization that is always learning.” 

HR Focus organizes four HR Interactive events every year ahead of its annual HR Focus Conference. This annual conference provides a larger platform for shared learning and networking among HR Practitioners in Ghana and across West Africa.
